Enablers, barriers and usability of the eSPICT tool in a community setting: an exploratory study

Project dates:
Commenced: 2023
Completion: In Progress

Australia is facing challenges associated with an ageing population. While many Australians will live longer with good health, many will experience complex multiple morbidities, frailty, cognitive decline, serious illnesses and higher healthcare costs in the last years of life. There is an urgent need to understand the requirements of older people living with life-limiting conditions in community settings to inform the development of practical solutions to accurately identify clients who would benefit from palliative care, and future healthcare planning conversations. This pilot study aims to determine the usability and acceptability of the electronica version of the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators tool (eSPICT) use in a retirement village setting.

Project outcomes:

This study has not yet begun as it is awaiting ethics approval. However, outcome measures include enablers and barriers to implementing the eSPICT identified through two focus groups with a consumer group and staff at a residential aged care facility to inform an implementation plan. Participant (consumer and staff) usability of eSPICT, too, will be measured according to the System Usability Scale (SUS).
