Participate in a research study – how children are fed in early education and care

Update November 2018: Recruitment for this study has now closed.  We have visited over 30 childcare centres across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and the Sunshine Coast.  We appreciate the support of all the educators involved!

Hello and thanks for checking out the details of our study.  We are looking for educators who are caring for children aged 2-3 years attending long day care.

The purpose of this project is to develop a questionnaire to understand how children are fed in the early childhood education and care setting. Most research into feeding practices has been completed with parents. By doing this work we aim to demonstrate the important role that educators play in supporting young children’s eating habits.

Your participation will involve a video recording of you and the children during a lunch time meal at the centre where you work.  We use a very small camera – a Go Pro – which can be fixed to a wall or shelf, so that it is unobtrusive during the meal time. You will also be asked to complete a short questionnaire that is usually completed by parents, and asked how you think it could be used with educators instead.

Please view the attached Educator_Video-Questionnaire_Information-Sheet for further details on the study. We have similar information sheets for parents and other educators at your centre. If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact me via email ra.byrne@qut.edu.au or phone 3069 7306.  I can also visit your centre to talk though the details of how the study works and provide you with copies of the parent information sheets.

This study has been approved by the QUT Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 1800000520).

Many thanks for your consideration.
