Participate in a study testing the accuracy and precision of wearable activity trackers in preschool age children

The Children’s Physical Activity Research Group of QUT’s Faculty of Health is conducting a study to assess the performance of new mathematical formulas (machine learning models) to predict activity type and energy expenditure in preschool age children. The study will also assess the performance of commercially available activity trackers that are designed specifically for young children.

We are looking for children between the ages of 3-5 years who are willing to participate in activities of daily living and reside in the Brisbane metropolitan area.
The location of the play session will occur at a location of you and your child’s convenience, such as your home, a local park, or neighbourhood. Your child will be asked to wear small lightweight activity trackers on their hip, wrists and ankles, and a heart rate monitor. To measure energy expenditure, your child will be asked to wear a lightweight portable metabolic unit. The entire session will be approximately 40 minutes in duration with 10 minutes allotted at the beginning of the session to familiarize you and your child with the equipment, 20 minutes allotted for active play, and 10 minutes for sensor and equipment removal.

If you and your child are interested in participating or would like further information, please feel free to contact us via email: matthew.ahmadi@qut.edu.au or telephone: 3069 7342.
This study has been approved by the QUT Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 1700000423).
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Matthew Ahmadi
