Background

The fluorescence nanostructures (Quantum dots, QDs) exhibit robust optical properties such as high quantum yield, negligible photo-bleaching, etc. in the solution state. However, in the solid-state thin film, the above properties are lost. Since the solid-state film supports exciton migration, thus excited states are migrated to quenched defect sites resulting in fluorescence quenching. Modifying the nanostructures (quantum dots) surface with cationic entities during synthesis. Co-crystallization of the charged modified nanostructure with colourless macrocyclic anion receptor will enable one to transfer the robust optical properties of quantum dots from solution to solid-state.

Research Activities

This project aims to develop future photonic structures and thin films that has application in future quantum circuits, displays in vehicles etc. The project can be divided into following tasks:
1. Design and synthesis of organic macrocyclic receptors. Synthesis of quantum dots from waste with protocol already developed.
2. Investigation of the properties of material and application in Light emitting diodes.
3. 3D printing the material into photonic structure.
The ability to control the size of solid-state light emitting structures will enable us to develop lasers and other photonic equipment needed for future light-based quantum circuits.

Outcomes

The new class of macrocycle molecule, which has the potential to assemble QDs in solid-state without effecting its optical properties. Development of such composite structure can enable not only the isolation of individual QDs fluorophore but also preserves the hole mobility of the structure is needed to successfully employ the QDs in the active layer of future high performing light-emitting flexible devices.

Skills and experience

Background in chemistry and organic synthesis is must. The other skills can be taught during the project. Knowledge of 3D printing will be an asset but not necessary.
