Role in the Centre

Within the Centre for Materials Science at QUT, Lewis Chambers researches the reversible, light-induced crosslinking of polymeric materials in the solid state. This work is undertaken in collaboration with the Merck chemical company, with the end goal of demonstrating the utility of a precision photoligation strategy advanced in our group in tangible, real-world applications. Lewis’ research interests are broadly focused on how photochemistry can be employed to manipulate the structure and properties of polymeric materials and how these processes can be characterised, both at the molecular level and the bulk materials scale.

Short Biography

Lewis Chambers completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons) at the University of Queensland in 2014, before going on to begin his PhD at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Yun Huang, A. Prof. Kevin Jack and A. Prof. Idriss Blakey. His PhD focused on the synthesis and characterisation of photo-responsive block copolymer materials, and the use of this photo-responsiveness to induce morphological transitions in solid state materials. Following this he moved to the Queensland University of Technology to design and study degradable polymeric drug delivery systems together with A. Prof. Kathryn Fairfull-Smith, and currently he works with Prof. Christopher Barner-Kowollik studying the physical properties of photo-responsive polymeric materials.
