Role within the Centre
Jamie Riches specialises in the application of transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques to a wide range of research projects at QUT. In his role as Senior Research Officer (Microscopy) within QUT’s Central Analytical Research Facility, he advises researchers on experimental design and approaches for the effective characterisation of samples. He also trains researchers in the use of TEM for their research projects and works collaboratively with researchers on common projects of interest. He has a particular interest in the application of electron tomography and image processing to the structural determination of materials.
Jamie was awarded his PhD in Physics from The University of Queensland in 1999. Since then he has applied advanced electron microscopy techniques to solve a variety of research problems. He has worked at Germany’s Insitut fuer physikalische Hochtechologie (1999-2001), the Structural and Computational Biology Department within the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (2007-2012), and the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis at The University of Queensland in Australia (2001-2006). Jamie joined QUT in 2012, where his work on structural determination of viruses (Marburg and Ebola) through cryo-electron tomography and sub-tomogram averaging was recognised with the David Goodchild Award in 2014. He is active in the Australian microscopy community, currently serving as Treasurer for the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Society.
