Role in the Centre

Aidan is an early-career researcher with expertise in supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, synthetic coordination chemistry and catalysis. Within the Centre for Materials Science, Aidan brings together his interdisciplinary knowledge to solve problems across a range of areas and is currently focusing on the design new hybrid materials containing transition metal complexes for catalysis. His broader research interests lie in the design and synthesis of functional, structurally complex crystalline materials for use in environmental, energy and synthetic applications. Aidan has also used his expertise in X-ray and neutron crystallography to establish collaborations with research groups across the Centre, determining the atomic structures of new materials.

Short Biography

Aidan completed his Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours at the University of Queensland in 2012. This was followed by a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry (2017) at the same institution in the group of Prof. Jack Clegg, where he undertook research into new design and synthesis approaches to heterometallic coordination frameworks. Following a brief postdoctoral stint in the same lab, in mid-2018 he moved to the group of Prof. John McMurtrie at QUT as a postdoctoral researcher, working on new transition metal catalyst hybrid materials in collaboration with Prof. Peter Roesky (Karlsruhe) and Prof. Christopher Barner-Kowollik (QUT). In 2021, Aidan moved to the group of Associate Professor Eric Waclawik at QUT to conduct further research on hybrid materials containing transition metal catalysts.
