Sekar Ulaganathan completed his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry, from the Elite School of Optometry, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, India, in 2007. Motivated by his undergraduate research project on glaucoma subjects, Sekar started to pursue his Master of Optometry degree by research in 2007. Sekar submitted his thesis titled “Dark-Light Changes in Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography to Differentiate Plateau Iris Configuration in Primary Angle Closure Disease” and graduated with a master degree in 2009. During this period, he was also a Resident Optometrist at DRR eye hospital, India.

After completing his master degree, Sekar worked as an optometrist in a mobile Tele-ophthalmology unit at Sankara Nethralaya, India until 2010. Sekar later worked as a lecturer at Sri Ramachandra University, India, teaching visual optics for a period of 6 months. From the year 2011 to 2014, Sekar worked as a lecturer at the International University of Technology Twintech, in Malaysia, teaching various subjects including Visual optics, Optometric Optics, Optometric Instrumentation, and Ocular Diseases in Optometry. During this period, Sekar also worked as a Resident Optometrist at Optimax Eye Specialist Centre, in Malaysia. To further extend his research interests, Sekar supervised the final year undergraduate optometry students in their research projects, which focussed mainly on myopia.

In 2014, so as to gain more experience in myopia research, Sekar commenced PhD research degree studies in myopia, under the supervision of Associate Professor Scott Read, at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at QUT. Sekar’s doctoral research focused on diurnal variation in ocular biometrics and refractive error development. He has presented his work in national and international conferences, and published his works in peer reviewed journals. In early 2018, Sekar Ulaganathan completed his PhD research studies.
