Damien graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science Optometry degree (Hons) in 1999 from QUT and has completed a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2013.  He spent two years working in rural NSW and then returned to Brisbane where he practiced at Laubman & Pank, Ipswich for over ten years.  Alongside this clinical work, Damien worked as a supervising clinician in the QUT Optometry Clinic.

In early 2015, Damien accepted a full time position at QUT as a clinical/research optometrist and in 2018 commenced his candidature for a PhD titled, “Physiologic corneal changes associated with scleral lens wear”.  A recipient of a QUT’s Vice Chancellor’s Award for teaching excellence in 2010 as part of the Contact Lens Supervisors team, and also QUT Vice Chancellor’s performance awards for his contribution to the contact lens, low vision and outreach clinics. Damien has delivered guest lectures to both undergraduate and postgraduate optometry students and participated in OneSight vision screenings with Luxottica and serviced Outreach clinics for Indigenous patients through QUT. Damien served as Vice-National Chair in Luxottica’s Optometry Council and National President for the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia for which he is current Qld Chapter President.

Damien has had 3 manuscripts accepted for publication and has presented his research and a poster at an international congress.  Damien is a recipient of the Dorothy Carlborg Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia research award for his PhD work.
