The generosity of a patron has enabled important myopia (short-sighted) research to be conducted at QUT’s Centre for Vision and Eye Research, Contact Lens and Visual Optics Laboratory (CLVOL). Funding received from the patron has enabled the 3-Year Postdoctoral Research Fellow appointment of Dr Rohan Hughes (a former QUT doctoral student and optometry graduate), as well as payment of a 3-Year scholarship to fulltime QUT PhD Student, Shashank Bhandary.
Dr Rohan Hughes is investigating improvements to short-sighted treatments (atropine eye drops, glasses and contact lenses) which are currently available to young children to slow myopia progression; Whilst Shashank Bhandary is concentrating his doctoral research on genetic and environmental factors of near-work activities such as reading, studying, smartphone screen use, and laptop/computer screen use.
Both Rohan and Shashank are conducting their myopia research in CLVOL on QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus, and are being mentored by renown myopia researcher, Professor Michael Collins.
