PhD Thesis Title:

An Exploration of Adult Visitor Engagement in Suburban Neighbourhood Park Settings

PhD Research Summary:

The research aims to understand the engagement of different groups of adult visitors in the neighbourhood parks, to inform park designers and policymakers as they develop park settings involving diverse population groups, and to help create healthy and sustainable communities. With an exploratory research design with the case study approach using multiple methods, this study focused on the adult visitors’ engagement in the identified park settings. The study has explored spatial behavioural patterns of the adult visitors in the park settings and conducted integrated qualitative and quantitative analysis from the objective and subjective data. The findings revealed that adults engaged differently in the park spaces when compared by age groups in both parks. The findings also emerged that intergenerational and social activities could take place in several park spaces and activity settings, and multiple factors affecting park use can create opportunities for the social sustainability of the neighbourhood. The outcomes of this exploratory research are a practical contribution to park design and behavioural studies on adult neighbourhood park use.  The evaluative components of this research have practical implications for landscape architecture, leisure and social sciences and urban and health studies.
