Gender and Public Space: Designing Gender-Friendly Public Space to Support Women’s Engagement in Public Space in Dhaka, Bangladesh

PhD Research Summary:

Inexorable urbaniSation and cultural evolution are shrinking the public space day by day and re-shaping the women’s presence in public space in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Only 16% of residents have access to green fields, parks and playgrounds; moreover, the limited provision of public space in Dhaka is oriented predominantly towards male users. According to a recent study, spending a minimum of two hours per week amid nature is proved to have higher levels of health benefits and limited access to parks, gardens and playing fields lower the chance of getting such benefits. ‘Gender and spatiality’ is a less explored field in Bangladesh, and gender dynamics in Bangladesh differs significantly from western culture, so as their engagement in public space. Design of gender-friendly public space, therefore, requires a tailored design model that is contextually and culturally appropriate. This research will propose a design model of gender-friendly public space in Dhaka, Bangladesh by analyzing the preferences, and needs of women and experts’ opinions.
