PhD Title:
Understanding the Built Environment Impact of Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities on Active Ageing of Older Australians
PhD Research Summary:
The world’s population is ageing. Although most of older people prefer to age in place, it is challenging given various reasons such as reduced physical capability and unprepared community environment. Naturally occurring retirement community (NORC) as an effective solution of ageing in place has been developed for more than three decades in the U.S., however, this kind of ageing model have not been recognised neither by the ageing cohort nor by the government or service providers in Australia. This research is aiming to understand the formation and development of NORCs in Australia, investigate how the built environment affect the independent living of the older residents in NORCs, and theorise an Australian version of NORC from a community planning point of view. This PhD study employs GIS to identify the geographical distribution of NORC on the map and Bayesian Network to analyse the impact of built environment factors on the NORC residents.
