Project Synopsis:
As the population ages and most of senior Australians prefer to ageing in place, there is a pressing need to understand how community environment, both physically and socially, supports their independent living as long as possible. This research aims to: (a) develop an integrative theoretical model addressing the interaction between physical and social environment of the community, and investigate how the community environment as a whole influences seniors’ aging in place; (b) develop a word-first rating tool for the assessment of ageing friendly communities and propose the ranking of ageing-friendly communities/suburbs in Brisbane (with possibility of expanding to Queensland and Australia), and; (c) propose practical strategies and guidelines for community development and renovation for the housing industry.
