New technology binds Covid-19 virus to cotton textiles

QUT scientists biologists Dr Laura Navone, Professor Robert Speight and CIIC Director & virologist Prof Kirsten Spann has developed a technology that is proven to bind and capture the SARS-CoV-2 virus onto cotton textiles and prevent cell infection.  The novel  technology has been patented and  the finding published in Communications Materials – Nature Bioengineered textiles that capture SARS-CoV-2 viral particles

  • QUT scientists have developed a way to trap the virus on cotton and other plant-derived fabric
  • The patented process could be used to prevent virus infections in hospitals and public transport
  • Further research required to confirm complete virus inactivation
