Better friends, better lives: Supporting children’s talk and interaction in multilingual settings

This video ethnography explores how children make friends in a multi-lingual preschool setting. The project employs a case study design to video-record two English language learners’ everyday interactions with peers in a preschool setting. The project also seeks the views of all children in the class using child-friendly interviews for children to draw and talk about friendships. By closely examining the interactional strategies used by children who have English as an additional language (EAL), the proposed project will provide answers about the social cues, signs and strategies children use in a multilingual preschool setting. Educators and parents may use this information to develop optimal learning and social environments.
