A Systemic Framework for Trauma-Aware Schooling in Queensland

After years of many schools adopting admirable systemic practices that emphasise positive behavioural and restorative responses, it has become increasingly clear that despite many benefits, these approaches don’t go far enough. It is also clear that many schools were still struggling with managing the behaviours of students who exhibit the most challenging behaviour concerns, in a way that does not involve suspension and exclusion. Many of these students come from complex trauma backgrounds.

Drawing from research explaining the impact that complex childhood trauma has on experiences and outcomes for students during the schooling years and beyond, this project examined the requirements for a state-wide approach to trauma-aware schooling in Queensland, providing impetus for a new vision for schooling systems across Australia and overseas.
