Project title

Role of Peroxisomes in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Supervisory Team

Principal Supervisor: Professor Nathan Subramaniam
Associate Supervisor: Dr Daniel Wallace
External Supervisor: Dr Gautam Rishi

Project description

The scale of liver disease ranges from non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which can progress into liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis and subsequently lead to hepatocellular carcinoma.  Abnormal lipid accumulation and iron overload might contribute to the transition of NAFLD to NASH. Since peroxisomes are involved in abnormal lipid accumulation and iron overload, in this project we would like to investigate the effect of peroxisomal defects on the progression of NAFLD to NASH.  Thereby,  providing new avenues for better diagnosis and personalized therapies.
