Upcoming: Navigating Complex Decisions in Asset Management
Wednesday 2 Oct 2024
Discover a new way of thinking that will help you transform dilemmas into growth opportunities and possibilities for innovation.
Join us for this free information seminar jointly hosted by the Asset Institute and QUT’s Centre for Future Enterprise. The seminar introduces strategies to navigate complex asset management dilemmas, turning challenges into growth and innovation opportunities.
Asset management decisions can be derailed by complex and competing challenges, which are paradoxical in nature. These may include:
- Transitioning from a coal-dominated system to renewable energy solutions, while grappling with infrastructure limitations and inadequate energy storage capabilities.
- Balancing the urgency for rapid infrastructure development with the need for comprehensive planning and stakeholder engagement.
- Navigating the competing demands of multiple stakeholders with differing priorities.
- Prioritising asset upgrades versus new investments and integrating new assets into existing infrastructure.
- Managing the trade-off between controlling costs and investing in quality, sustainable improvements.
- Aligning day-to-day operational targets with broader, long-term strategic goals that may not yield immediate results.
- Balancing the retention of experienced staff with the infusion of new talent to address skill gaps and ensure leadership continuity.
Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your decision-making skills!

Innovating Like Silicon Valley in Asset-Intensive Industries: A Research Proposal
At the event held on 26 August, Prof. Rob Perrons discussed an upcoming QUT research project designed to help asset-intensive industries innovate with the same urgency as Silicon Valley. By carefully studying and deconstructing the organisational tools and behaviours that deliver a culture of innovation at Silicon Valley giants like Google, Amazon, IBM and Intel, and then translating them to become appropriate for the targeted sectors, this research project aims to give Australia’s asset-intensive industries the tools and strategies that will allow them to innovate more aggressively, effectively, and quickly. In so doing, this project will offer a fresh approach to improving innovation in foundational parts of the Australian economy.
This research project will consist of three phases that each last approximately one year: mapping innovation environments and current processes in asset-intensive industries; mapping innovation environments and current processes in Silicon Valley organisations; and finally translating and embedding the innovation principles and tools learned within the asset-intensive industry here in Australia.
