ABSTRACT: Robustness, Resilience, and Fragility: Beyond the Alphabet Soup?

Can we design robust systems? How might we build organisations that are resilient? Can governance mechanisms enable us to create less fragile societies? These are a few questions that I will explore in this presentation. Drawing on my work since the early 2000s, I will share my views on these questions. My research projects have spanned examination of terrorist networks to the workings of intelligence communities, disaster and crisis response systems, managing information systems in complex environments, the design of smart cities, and the governance of emerging technologies in the public sector. The goal of this presentation is not to answer these questions, but to share ideas on how inter-disciplinary research efforts might enable us to design evidence-driven solutions to tackle some of our most vexing societal challenges.
