The marginalisation of inexperienced young job seekers through job advertisements

Youth unemployment has most commonly been investigated from a deficit model perspective, identifying the structural and personal barriers experienced by youth when entering the workforce. Yet limited research has investigated the availability of suitable jobs for young Australians with limited or no work experience, education, or qualifications. This project investigated the availability of suitable jobs for inexperienced young people, and the extent to which employer expectations for prior experience, qualifications, and well-developed hard and soft skills for entry level jobs, further marginalise youth who do not possess these attributes. The project contributes to ongoing concerns about the causes and impacts of youth unemployment.
