An early diagnosis tool for people at risk of heart attack and stroke

We are developing a diagnostic tool to better assess atheroma burden in patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease causes one in four deaths in Australia and adults with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Spontaneous rupture and erosion of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques are responsible for most acute vascular syndromes and many fatalities. However, there is no single technique currently available to assess plaque vulnerability accurately. Our team is developing a tool to diagnose and manage these vulnerable patients accurately.

This project integrates our team’s extensive experience in developing image-based computational modelling techniques and established methodologies. Critical input from clinicians will guide the design of the software tool. The MTPConnect TTRA program funding will enable this project to develop a prototype for testing in a clinical setting and advance towards a commercial diagnostic tool.
