Scientific talks, awards and research support and training on offer

At the August Lunch Club Katherine Theobald from the Graduate Research Education and Development (GRE+D) team provided an overview of the training and support offered to HDRs, HDR supervisors and ECRs. Dr Madusha Perera and Master student, Alba Cisneros Martin updated us on their research projects.

The CBT Lunch Club events offer our HDR students and early career researchers an opportunity to give practice talks and be inspired by other researchers. We also award outstanding achievements and share success stories.

Congratulations to Martina Gyimesi, PhD Candidate on receiving the August Outstanding HDR Award nominated by her supervisor A/Prof Larissa Haupt with the motivation:
Martina’s publication is receiving wide coverage in the media and has already been downloaded 1000 times from the journal (Open Biology). In addition, Martina was recently selected as a Discussion Leader for the Gordon Research Conference Proteoglycans GRS meeting and was selected for a short talk in the main meeting. More information about the speakers:

Dr Madusha Perera: Salivary micro-RNA as biomarkers to predict performance under stress
Madusha is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working on the ‘Mind and Body Performance Patch’ project, under the supervision of A/Prof. Tony Parker at the Tissue Repair and Translational Physiology (TRTP) Group. She earned her PhD from QUT in 2022, where her research focused on identifying potential new phytochemicals to treat chronic wounds. Currently specialising in molecular and cell biology, Madusha focuses on transcriptome profiling in saliva to identify micro-RNA biomarkers that indicate physical and cognitive performance under stress. Her work aims to enhance readiness in stressful conditions through innovative diagnostic tools and wearable technology, effectively bridging the gap between molecular science and practical applications.

Alba Cisneros Martin (Master Student)
Alba is a visitor student enrolled in a master in Biofabrication in Germany and she is currently here in Brisbane doing her master thesis. Her research primarily revolves around mechanical characterization. Specifically, Alba is investigating infections associated with biofabricated implants within the body. Her current focus lies in conducting detailed analyses to enhance understanding of these complex interactions.
