Prof. Gu is leading a large research group, including 3 academics, 2 ARC Future fellows, 1 ARC DECRA fellow , 1 senior VC research fellow, 4 postdoctoral fellows, 3 visiting academics, and more than 15 PhD students.

Main research areas:   Prof. Gu and his group define the below 3 main research areas:

1) Advanced numerical modelling and simulation for engineering and science     Prof. Gu’s research in this area is focused on

  • Advanced/Modified Finite Element Method for engineering applications
  • Novel Meshless (Meshfree) techniques and its applications
  • CFD and its applications
  • Multiscale modelling and simulation for material and mechanical engineering
  • Advanced numerical modelling and simulation for mechanical engineering applications

2) Experiment and Numerical modelling for Biomechanics and biomedical systems   Prof. Gu’s research in this area is focused on

  • Experimental and numerical modelling study for living cells and tissues
  • Multiscale modelling and simulation for biomedical systems
  • Novel Meshless (Meshfree) techniques,modified FEM and their combination for biomedical  modelling
  • Numerical modelling and simulation for biofluid mechanics

3) Nanotechnology and nanodevice     Prof. Gu’s research in this areas focuses on

  • Experimental study for nanowire based nano-devices
  • Advanced numerical modelling and simulation for nanotechnology
  • Advanced multiscale modelling techniques crossing macro-, micro- and nano- dimensions for nano-manufacturing and nano-materials fabrication
  • Coupled Molecular Dynamics/ Monte Carlo/Meshless modelling technique
  • Numerical investigation for the crossing-scale deformation mechanism in material
  • Multiscale characterisation techniques for material and manufacturing
