Dr Avishka Wickramarachchi: Towards improving VA ECMO practice: a multi-modal assessment of drainage and arterial cannulas

“I was a session chair for the conference section titled “Advancing Clinical Care: Understanding Adverse Events and Innovating Smarter Pumps”. Then I presented my research, which was titled: Towards improving VA ECMO practice: a multi-modal assessment of drainage and arterial cannulas”, says Dr Wickramarachchi.

“I presented the research I did during my PhD, where I used various techniques like CFD, mock circulatory loops, and blood loops to evaluate cannula flow dynamics and identify risk of complications during VA ECMO, while providing novel and improved designs and strategies that ultimately can be translated clinically to improve patient outcomes.”

Prashant Chand, PhD Candidate: Assessing the efficacy of HeartMate 3 in supporting heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A virtual clinical trial approach

“I was invited to give an oral and poster presentation titled, “Assessing the Efficacy of HeartMate 3 in Supporting Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: A Virtual Clinical Trial Approach,” based on my work with the Artificial Heart Frontiers Mini Pump project”, says PhD Candidate, Chand.

“My research involved developing an advanced numerical model integrating circulatory and respiratory systems to simulate diverse patient physiologies. This model was coupled with a virtual clinical trial framework, enabling the simultaneous evaluation of thousands of patients in-silico. This approach effectively captures patient variability and physiological distributions, aligning closely with outcomes observed in real-world clinical studies.”

“Using this platform, I evaluated the HeartMate 3’s performance in reducing left atrial pressure under both resting and exercise conditions for this particular type of heart failure. The analysis provided insights into the device’s efficacy and identified potential associated risks, as well as patient phenotypes that would likely experience these risks.”
