Dr Mohammed Elhenawy is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). His expertise lies in the application of machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical learning, and deep learning to transportation safety and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Dr Elhenawy has made significant contributions to road safety research and technology, particularly through his data-driven models. He has authored over 120 papers covering topics such as connected vehicles, machine learning applications, and mobility. Notably, his research includes substantial involvement in Australia’s largest Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) pilot, aimed at improving road safety through advanced vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication.

Beyond C-ITS, Dr Elhenawy has led and collaborated on a variety of innovative projects, including the Development and Performance Testing of LAARMA, a Large Animal Activated Roadside Monitoring and Alert System, which enhances the detection and prevention of animal-vehicle collisions. He also worked on the Glare on Tunnel Endpoints project, which provides new methodologies for analysing and simulating road safety issues related to tunnel glare.

His work also includes The Safer Scooting Study, which focuses on improving the safety of electric scooter riders, a growing and vulnerable mode of transport. Additionally, he led the Hold the Red Evaluation, which evaluates the effectiveness of extending the “all-red” traffic signal phase in response to red-light running incidents to enhance intersection safety. Furthermore, his project on Using Crowdsourced Data to Improve Road Management leverages third-party crowdsourced data from road users to improve road safety outcomes.

Dr Elhenawy’s research and contributions have garnered national and international recognition, including awards like the Best Paper Award in Intelligent Vehicle Technologies, reflecting his impact on advancing road safety technologies and transportation systems.
