Development and Performance Testing of LAARMA – Large Animal Activated Roadside Monitoring and Alert System

A new iMOVE CRC project with TMR will be investigating a Large Animal Activated Roadside Monitoring and Alert System (LAARMA). The intent of this project is to develop and field test a system for detecting large animals on the roadside, prompting an alert to motorists to provide advanced warning of the hazard. The project will evaluate:

  • the ability to accurately and reliably detect a number of animals (specifically horses, deer, cassowaries, cattle) on the roadside for distances of 200-300m under various weather and light conditions; and
  • the impact of advanced variable messages on driver behaviour, such as braking, speed profile changes, and lane departures.
