Comparing e-scooter safety in the ACT and other jurisdictions

E-scooter sharing schemes began in the US in 2017, Brisbane in 2018, Adelaide in 2019, and ACT in 2020. Cities differ regarding where e-scooters can be used, maximum speeds, and helmet requirements. Relatively little is known about rider knowledge, behaviours and attitudes. This project will survey e-scooter riders and other road users in the ACT to compare with findings from our recent surveys in Brisbane, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Norway and Sweden to better understand how regulatory approaches influence safety outcomes and perceptions for riders and non-riders. The findings will help inform future approaches to e-scooter safety in the ACT.
