Safety Essentials” are customised courses developed by CARRS-Q:
  • Short courses designed to develop and enhance specialist and multidisciplinary skills and knowledge in the road safety and injury prevention fields.
  • For those working in government, industry or community organisations as policy-makers, managers, practitioners, advocates and researchers.
  • Some courses can be modified to suit your requirements, and can be conducted on-Campus or off-site in Australia or overseas.
  • Group enrolment rates can be negotiated, as can travel and associated costs for off-site delivery.

Our staff have a wealth of experience gained through extensive research and engagement activities with government and industry organisations, international agencies, community and not-for-profit groups, and universities. Our expertise has been enhanced by work within the government, engineering, behavioural science, computer science, management and education sectors.

Road Safety Audit: A Safe System Approach

Aim: Practitioners will gain the knowledge and skills required to conduct a road safety audit.
Content: The course emphasises the Safe System approach, which aims to minimise human errors and the severity of their consequences by considering safer roads and roadsides, safer vehicles and safer speeds. In addition to enhancing participants’ knowledge of the basic and theoretical concepts of road safety audits, this course has hands-on exercises for detailed design-audits and existing roads audits, including day and night site visits. This course has been designed in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to satisfy all the requirements for an approved road safety audit course for the purpose of accreditation as a Road Safety Auditor.

Investigation and Treatment of Crash Locations

Aim: Train participants to conduct a black spot treatment exercise, and in the use a road safety engineering toolkit for identifying road safety problems and selecting suitable countermeasures.
Content: Introducing participants to a step-by-step process of identifying black spots, diagnosing safety issues, designing countermeasures, conducting an economic appraisal, and assessing the effectiveness of an implemented countermeasure through monitoring and evaluation. This course is based on the Austroads Guide to Road Safety, Part 8: “Treatment of Crash Locations”, which incorporates the Safe System approach.

Introduction to Road User Behaviour within the Safe System

Aim: Practitioners will gain an understanding of the principles of understanding the human factors of traffic behaviour within the Safe System approach and how these apply to the design and effectiveness of road safety/injury prevention interventions that target human behaviour.
Content: Participants will be introduced to the elements of the Safe System approach and to major models of traffic psychology and human behaviour (e.g. Deterrence Theory; Theory of Planned Behaviour; Health Beliefs Model, etc.). Specific interventions or case studies in the road safety and injury prevention fields are used to demonstrate the application of different models. The links between models, target behaviours/problems and the evaluation of effectiveness are discussed and attendees are encouraged to apply these to real issues in their own work/organisational setting.

Who should attend: Practitioners and policy-makers in the areas of organisational safety, road safety, or injury prevention.
Why should I attend? Gain an understanding of traffic psychology and how to apply it to road safety/injury prevention interventions.

Fundamentals of Road Safety

Aim: This course will provide practitioners with the basic knowledge and understanding required for sound analysis and decision making in relation to road safety.
Content: This one-day workshop provides attendees with an overview of the fundamental principles and elements of road safety practice. The role, importance and use of crash data are discussed, and attendees are introduced to ways of making sense of statistical data they may encounter in relation to road safety issues. The course discusses models and tools commonly used in the management of road safety, including the Haddon matrix and the Safe System Approach. Principles underlying the design of effective interventions are also addressed, with a focus on how to select effective interventions or to design interventions.
Duration: 1 day
Who should attend: Policy makers, practitioners and community members involved in identifying and addressing road safety issues, whether at the local level or broader.
Why should I attend? Participants will better understand crashes and their treatment and so be better able to take decisions and actions based on best practice.

Survey Design, Development and Use

Aim: Learn the skills necessary to measure the effectiveness of interventions and programs.
Content: Module 1: provides guidance on designing research studies and survey content to assist with measuring the effectiveness of interventions and programs. Module 2: demonstrates how to describe data collected from studies and surveys as well as fundamental considerations in interpretation and analysis.
Duration: 1 day comprised of 2 modules
Who should attend: Researchers, policy-makers and practitioners with limited to medium experience in survey design, development and use.
Why should I attend? Learn how to devise, run and interpret surveys to assist evaluation of any intervention or program designed to address safety issues.

Introduction to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Aim: An introduction to and overview of Intelligent Transport Systems, including cooperative systems and vehicle automation.
Content: Basic concepts of ITS ranging from sensor technology, wireless network to human factors are explored. Assessment of existing and future ITS applications to improve driver comfort, network efficiency, performance and safety, and reduce gas emissions are made.

Who should attend: Researchers, policy-makers and practitioners involved in any aspect of land transportation that can benefit from ITS.
Why should I attend? This course offers participants a framework which allows them to place current issues and policies in context.

Developing Action Plans for Safety Interventions

Aim: Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for effective action planning.
Content: Two workshops built on the Adult Learning Model and participants relate all learning to their own situation. Group work constitutes 50% of the time.Workshops 1 and 2 are separated by a period of time ranging from 6 weeks to 3 months. Prior to Workshop 1, all participants are asked to prepare a profile of a safety issue within their area of operation and bring this to the Workshop. Participants from the one organisation or agency may choose to focus on the same issue.Workshop 1 presents an overview of safety principles and practices which provide the backdrop against which to understand and address the issues identified in the profiles. Workshop 1 commences the action planning process which participants will continue when they return to their workplace. Workshop 2 examines the planning process undertaken since Workshop 1 by each participant. We will then continue to explore best practice planning techniques. By the end of Workshop 2, each participant will be invited to submit their Action Plan for critique by the Facilitator.
Duration: Each Workshop is 2 days (total 4 days over an agreed timeframe)
Who should attend: Novice to experienced practitioners from the community, government or business sectors who seek to develop planning skills and techniques for safety interventions.
Why should I attend? Participants develop an Action Plan for immediate implementation. Skills gained through this course will enable participants to make informed decisions and develop Action Plans to address future safety issues.
