Robotic crop management for vertical farming systems

This project is one of CAB’s 2020 Future Leaders Funding opportunities.

Vertical farming systems (VFS) are on the cusp of a revolution offering maximum efficiencies with regards to crop density, volume, nutrient and water usage. However, questions remain about their sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Developing artificial intelligence and robotic solutions for VFS will enable these systems to reduce cost, increase efficiency and minimise risks related to food safety and waste. This project aims to develop crop analysis tools and robot manipulation methods that will enable a robotic system to make key decisions for managing crops within a VFS.
