Advance Queensland Fellowship – Pulse legumes

Project dates: 2017 - 2022

Project Summary

Queensland has an unprecedented opportunity to increase production and export of tropical pulses in response to increasing global demand. Our tropical/subtropical environment, combined with close proximity to key markets, provides natural advantages in an increasingly competitive global market. While we have some natural advantages, increasing tropical pulse production here also has some inherent challenges. Increasing climate variability and change are major risk factors as are the increasing incidence of pests/diseases.

The project aims to increase the potential of pulse legumes like chickpeas, mungbeans and pigeon peas using molecular breeding, transgenic and genome editing technologies as part of industry-funded Advance Queensland research projects.
