Parasitic infections cost Australian’s livestock sector over $800 million annually. Due to increasing resistance to traditional chemical treatments, there is an urgent need for alternatives, such as biologic anti-parasite proteins (APP). Manufacturing biologics conventionally is expensive, but CAB Researchers are pioneering a cost-effective plant-based system to enhance APP production. Part of the key to success lies in accurately measuring the protein during production and after treatment. However, current detection methods are cumbersome and rely on external facilities.
This project will tackle these issues by leveraging cutting-edge synthetic biology and protein engineering to develop a rapid, specific, and high-throughput APP quantitation assay using protein biosensors. This innovation will support both the optimization of the manufacturing process and subsequent clinical studies in sheep.
