First aid treatment for burns – Cool running water for 20 minutes
1. Remove any clothing (including nappies) or jewellery from the burn area immediately
2. Cool the burn with cool running water for 20 minutes. DO NOT apply ice, oils or creams
3. Cover the burn with cling-film or a clean cloth. Do not break blisters
4. Seek medical attention for ALL children’s burns or if an adult’s burn is larger than 3cm
Applying 20 minutes of cool running water to a burn or scald provides pain relief and helps the burn to heal more quickly with less scarring.
You can apply first aid up to 3 hours after the injury and it will still be effective.
