Morgan’s background is proteomics, which is the study of groups of proteins found in the body. Morgan’s PhD will examine proteins in saliva to determine if markers of stress can be detected.

Pre-verbal babies and toddlers cannot express distress and discomfort, so Morgan hopes to identify protein groups that indicate stress and can be tested with a non-invasive saliva test. This is important as clinicians can alter their treatment or soothing strategies if a baby becomes more stressed during a procedure. This will lead to better long-term mental and emotional health of people who suffer burns and trauma as an infant.
