On June 5, Lionel Rayward presented his PhD Confirmation of Candidature, entitled ‘Application of 3D modelling Techniques for Pressure Injury Prediction’. He detailed his progress in developing a 3D finite element model (FEM) to predict deep tissue stresses in subjects when lying down. Once he has validated this FEM using ex vivo experimental testing on an animal model, the model predictions will provide new information describing the relationship between interface skin pressure and deep tissue pressure. This will lead to new knowledge of the tissue mechanics associated with the onset of deep tissue injuries. Lionel will now continue his research over the remaining 2 years of his PhD candidature.
