BSRG Winners at the 2024 Qld Health Awards for Excellence

Innovative thinking and a can-do attitude have resulted in clear and impactful benefits for our most complex young patients requiring lengthy surgical spine deformity correction surgery. Being selected as Finalists in the ‘Embracing Research and Innovation’ Category and then going on to be announced as Winners in this category was a thrilling additional outcome of this world-first work. The award was announced at the 2024 Queensland Health Awards for Excellence event held at the Brisbane City Hall on Wednesday June 19.

The BSRG’s collaborating Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Research Director Prof Geoff Askin and A/Prof Paige Little were nominated for their ‘Innovative Solutions for Impossible Surgeries in Complex Paediatric Patients’.

This work is a heartwarming example of a clear clinical need meeting clever engineering solutions and a supportive and generous industry partner in Sealy of Australia. The result is a single-use bespoke surgical mattress that is engineered to exactly fit the contours of our most complex patients when standard operating theatre supports are inadequate to safely position these patients for lengthy surgeries in the facedown position. Congratulations on this much deserved accolade and for directly impacting patient care.
