June is Scoliosis Awareness Month!

The goal of Scoliosis Awareness month is to highlight the growing need for public education, early detection and awareness about scoliosis and its prevalence in the Australian community.

The QUT Biomechanics and Spine Research Group (BSRG) is the only dedicated scoliosis research group in the Southern Hemisphere.  The BSRG team was formed in Brisbane in 2002, through the partnership of a Brisbane-based senior spinal orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Dr Geoffrey Askin, and the inaugural Chair of Medical Engineering at QUT, Emeritus Professor Mark Pearcy. The group was formed with a vision and remit to carry out high quality, clinically focused research into spinal deformity and spinal disorders in children. Today, led by Associate Professor Paige Little, and still in partnership with specialist spine orthopaedic surgeons, Professor Labrom and Professor Askin (Clinical Research Directors), the research vision for the BSRG has remained the same.

  • development of new technologies to enhance the surveillance and treatment of scoliosis,
  • creating new understanding of the development and progression of vertebra and surrounding soft tissue deformity characterising scoliosis in children,
  • innovative techniques to make treatment of young patients safer, with reduced exposure to radiographic imaging, and
  • development of new clinical approaches to enable equitable access for all young scoliosis patients to high quality spinal healthcare, through novel eHealth apps.
