Estimation of the availability of Australian sourced biomass

Project dates: 01/01/2016 - 31/12/2017

The project provided information to Southern Oil Refinery and an estimation of the availability of biomass resources in Australia. The study was established for the purpose of utilising hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) technology to produce relatively low oxygen and low ash bio-crude for refining to fuels and other products at their Wagga Wagga (NSW) and Gladstone (Qld) refineries.

The project consisted of three stages, the first stage determined biomass availability on a national scale and the second stage provided a more detailed assessment of potential biomass availability in the Gladstone (QLD) region from the sugar cane, cotton and timber processing industries as well as biosolids from major sewage processing plants in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Data collected for biomass availability and supply chain costs were analysed in stage three for HTL bio-crude production.
