Asahi Group Holdings Ltd has invented a novel process to produce high quality sugar and ethanol from low purity sugarcane and energy canes. This biotechnology process called the Inversion Process offers the opportunity for sugar factories to increase sugar yields, improve sugar quality and produce valuable co-products in an integrated process.

In this project, QUT worked with Asahi Group Holdings to demonstrate the Inversion Process at the QUT Mackay Renewable Biocommodities Pilot Plant (MRBPP).

The project involved:

  1. Demonstrating the production of syrup from sugarcane using the Inversion Process.
  2. Assessing the yield and quality of crystal sugar produced compared to conventional sugar processes.
  3. Technical and economic assessment of the Inversion Process compared to conventional processes.
