PhD Candidate at Queensland University of Technology

B.Eng (Hons) Chemical Process Engineering, Queensland University of Technology Minors: Environmental Management, Ecology Thesis: ‘A Multifaceted Approach to Optimising the Growth Substrate of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens for Animal Feed Supplements Using Statistical Design’.

Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology), Queensland University of Technology

Roanna is passionate about environmental sustainability and has a strong interest in innovative waste management technologies. As an engineer and scientist, with a background in psychology, she has an unusual set of skills and can provide a unique perspective on a range of complex problems.

Roanna’s PhD aims to support Australian growers to manage their fruit and vegetable losses in an economically and environmentally sustainable way. She will apply qualitative research, techno-economic assessments and life cycle analyses to determine the feasibility of several waste management technologies. This research will culminate in a framework that supports farmers when making decisions about managing their fruit and vegetable losses. Roanna is an Australian Government Research Training Program and Fight Food Waste CRC Scholarship recipient.

Roanna joined the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy in 2017, as a casual research assistant. She specialises in process modelling, techno-economic assessments, data processing, statistical design and laboratory work. She has worked on several projects, including the production of bioplastics, probiotics and microbial oil for advanced biofuels using agricultural wastes or by-products as a feedstock.

Roanna is part of the QUT Green Champion group, which aims to improve sustainability on campus. She also volunteers as a Young Science Ambassador with the Wonder of Science program, promoting a STEM culture in schools.
