Doctor in Biological Sciences

Dr Laura Navone is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at QUT. Her work focuses on the areas of synthetic biology and industrial biotechnology. Laura specialises in enzyme development for industrial applications and strain engineering of protein production platforms (i.e. Pichia pastoris). Laura strives to conduct innovative research by applying emerging synthetic biology approaches to solve real-world problems. Her current research aims to understand protein folding and secretion pathways in yeast and develop a molecular toolbox to overcome bottlenecks in expression.

Other research areas are the use of enzymes for innovative recycling technologies (e.g. textiles) and for the generation of value-added products from industrial waste.

Background. Laura completed her Bachelor in Biotechnology in 2009 at The National University of Rosario (UNR), Argentina, and her PhD in Biological Sciences at The Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biology- UNR in 2014. During her PhD research she studied primary metabolic pathways and secondary metabolite production in Streptomycetes.

In 2014, Laura was awarded an Australian Government Endeavour Fellowship to conduct postdoctoral research at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at The University of Queensland. She continued working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at AIBN in an industry funded project until 2016. During this period she worked on metabolic engineering of Propionibacterium strains for the production of metabolites with high industrial interest.

Since the start of her position at QUT in July 2016, Laura’s research has focused on enzyme improvement for industrial applications. Laura was awarded a CSIRO/QUT Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform Fellowship (SynBio FSP) in 2019 to continue her research on the development of synthetic biology tools for recombinant protein production in the yeast Pichia pastoris.

Experience. Dr Laura Navone has experience in industry-linked projects in the areas of:

  • Strain engineering for optimisation of protein production platforms (bacterial and yeast).
  • Enzyme development for industrial applications.
  • Metabolic engineering for biosynthesis of metabolites with high industrial interest.
