Personalised Anatomical Modelling

3D Printed Anatomical Models

We are investigating the use of 3D printing to create anatomical models of patient anatomy for use in surgical planning and patient education. In addition to 3D printing, 3D digital modelling can allow additional technology to be incorporated into service provision such as augmented-reality assisted robotic surgery.

To create these patient-specific 3D digital models, a user segments the target anatomy from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Specialised segmentation software provides tools to aid in creating a 3D digital model. This 3D model can then be manipulated with computer-aided design (CAD) software to modify the shape or colours of the construct. This model can then be converted into a stereolithography file (STL) which may be uploaded to a 3D printer which 3D prints the object.

This research is being carried out by PhD student Dr Michael Chen, in collaboration with Dr Nick Rukin, Consultant Urologist at Redcliffe Hospital.
