“Paradigm Shifts in Macroeconomics: Natural Evolution or Framed Narrative”
Thesis project
Paradigm shifts within economics and other social sciences remains an area of academic debate. It is a popular claim that a paradigm shift occurred in the 1970-80s when Neoliberalism replaced Keynesian macroeconomic policies within many Western countries. However, no consensus methodology for measuring paradigm shifts within economics has been established. My research aims to build off existing methodologies that explore journal article literature, while going beyond the existing methodology to explore article sentiment and the role narratives played in the spread of Neoliberalism. Additionally, how these narratives differentiated between countries is a pivotal component of my research.
The research project I have undertaken aligns with the research program of behavioural economics and public policy. I aim to explore the importance of narrative and narrative control on public policy support. Through focusing on paradigm shifts within macroeconomics it is my belief that narrative control was a pivotal component in the rapid implementation of Neoliberal related economic policies in many Western countries.
