UnPackathon: Applying behavioural economics to common policy problems

Held in June, the UnPackathon provided a platform for introducing government leaders to BEST and behavioural economics. Raging social media activity post event, particularly shares on LinkedIn, illustrated that the UnPackathon made a significant impression on the 15 plus participants, including senior representatives from:

  • QLD Health
  • ATO
  • Workcover QLD
  • Department of Transport and Main Roads
  • Department of Agriculture, Water and The Environment
  • Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
  • Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy

Several attendees returned for the Agriculture and Natural Resources workshop the following week, bringing along colleagues. A big thank you is owed to Prof Brett Heyward and the team at QUTeX for driving this event. Based on the success of our first UnPackathon we hope to run further events.

Focus Points from the UnPackathon:

  • Outlined some contemporary Behavioural Economics Insights from Europe
  • Discussed how Behavioural Economics can be applied in agencies
  • Discussed how we can collaborate further with industry
