Jakob goes to the polar south

Jakob is a part of the Atmospheric Team on the Denman Marine Voyage

From March to May 2025, an international team of scientists will embark on the RSV Nuyina to the Denman Glacier (66.75°S, 99.50°E) for the Denman Marine Voyage, Nuyina’s maiden scientific voyage. While glaciologists, oceanographers, and biologists work below the surface to uncover the secrets of the Denman Glacier, the Atmospheric team have their heads in the clouds investigating the sources, processes, and dynamics of the atmosphere that contribute to cloud formation. The entire team helps launch radiosondes, led by Kelsey Barbar, that profiles the thermodynamical structure of the atmosphere including temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed/direction. Chelsea Bekemeier leads the collection of filters for the analysis of ice nucleating particles and DNA present in aerosols from the atmosphere but also from the depths of the ocean. Salvatore Sodano and Jakob Boyd Pernov are stationed in the Air Chemistry Lab, overlooking the operation and maintenance of aerosol microphysical instrumentation (CPCs, SMPS, and CCNc). Thomas Paynter is an electron wrangler (aka an electrical engineer) assisting all team members with excellent technical and IT support. This work involves collaboration from CSIRO (Ruhi Humphries), Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies/University of Tasmania (Marc Mallet), Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (Marc Mallet; Ruhi Humphries), Queensland University of Technology (Branka Miljevic and Joel Alroe), Australian Antarctic Division (John French and Simon Alexander), University of Utah (Jay Mace), Colorado State University (Jessie Creamean), and Bureau of Meteorology (Alain Protat). Together they aim to measure the concentration of aerosols that contribute to both liquid and ice containing clouds as well as the vertical structure of the atmosphere. This can inform us about biosphere-atmosphere-precipitation interactions and how and why clouds form in the Southern Ocean/Antarctica.
