FAQs

About Virtual Reality

  1. What is Virtual Reality?
    • Virtual Reality (VR) creates simulated experiences in a virtual environment that can be created to appear similar or completely different to the real world. Standard VR systems include a headset or a multi-projected environment to create images, sounds, and other sensations simulating a physical experience in a virtual environment.
  2. How does it work?
    •  In simple terms, you put on a VR headset and a machine uses software to replace your physical environment with an immersive virtual experience. Users can select different applications that create a variety of fun experiences from games, to travel expeditions, or snorkelling adventures.
  3. Are there different types of VR headsets?
    • Yes, there are different types of VR headsets made by different companies. They have small differences in their features. Many apps work with different headsets, regardless of the brand.
  4. What do people use VR for?
    • VR is used for a range of activities, including playing games, entertainment, working, designing, and creating things.
  5. Do I need to be a gamer to use VR?
    • No! You do not need to be a gamer to use VR. You don’t need to have any prior experience playing games or using VR before you start using it. Trust us – and just try it, and soon your teen may well be coming to you for the advice!
  6. How do the controls work?
    • The VR controllers allow users to interact with the virtual world they are seeing through the VR headset. The controllers have a set of buttons, triggers, and a stick to grab on to, and allow you virtually grab and move virtual objects.
  7. Do I need to use the controls while using VR?
    • No! In working with older adults, we found it was easier to start without using VR controllers – and they still had a wonderful experience, on safari to Africa or hot air ballooning. Over time, people may request or choose to use the controllers – and these help with some experiences, such as the puzzles and games in Alcove.
  8. Do I need to have a Facebook account to use VR?
    • For the Oculus Quest or Meta Quest VR headsets, YES you must have a Facebook account. However, Facebook is working to change this requirement in the next few months. We hope this happens sooner than later!
  9. Is there anyone out there who can come and help us get started?
    • Yes. Contact The Ageing Revolution at info@theageingrevolution.com if you want to find out more about how VR training and facilitation can be delivered at your facility.

VR Health and Safety

  • Is it safe?
    • Yes! VR is safe when used correctly. That is why it is important to consider the needs of your users, your space and technology requirements, and follow recommended steps to get set up and started.
  • Is it safe for people of all ages or only certain ages?
    • It cam be used safely for people of all ages – as long as appropriate health and safety protocols are used.
  • Is it safe for people who have a mental illness or disability?
    • It can be used safely by people with different abilities, however appropriate health and safety protocols should be used. This should be determined on a case-by-case basis and the needs of the individual user.
  • What if the user wears glasses?
    • You can wear glasses when using a VR headset as long as the glasses aren’t too large and aren’t touching the lenses.
Each Oculus Quest 2 comes with a glasses attachment called a spacer. Make sure the spacer is used to ensure comfort for the person wearing glasses. The spacer doesn’t need to be removed for people who don’twear glasses, so we suggest leaving it there permanently. Don’t forget to assist with removing the headset gently. If a person uses glasses for long distances, they may find they don’t even need to wear their glasseswith the VR headset. Sometimes, even people who are short-sighted can use VR without their glasses. Experiment with your residents to see what they prefer. Here’s a link that shows you how to use the glasses spacer with the Oculus Quest 2 headset: https://support.oculus.com/3920738394639999.
