Using a social robot to deliver imagery-enhanced narrative therapy for cystic fibrosis in young people

Robot-supported narrative therapy for cystic fybrosis in young people

Jeremy Russell, with the support of David Kavanagh, Esben Strodl and Jenny Connolly, is combining narrative and metacognitive therapies and imagery, to help young people cope with cystic fibrosis (CF). Over 3 sessions, participants reflect upon images and personal narratives of their past and present experiences, and create stories and images reflecting a positive but realistic future. These narratives and images are compiled into a storybook that the young person presents to their family, to enlist their support in creating this better future. In one study, a face-to-face version of the approach is trialled and refined, and in a second, it is primarily delivered by a social robot.
