The Queensland Resources Council and the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (ACE) at Queensland University of Technology are joining forces to help more new mining ventures get off the ground.
Awarded with a $283,000 Linkage grant by the Australian Research Council, the project Pursuing the right opportunities: The actor-opportunity nexus and new venture performance will collect and analyse data on new ventures in Australian mining between 1980 and 2011.
The aim of the research includes enhancing the understanding of what determines the success or failure of new business ventures, particularly in Australian mining, with the ultimate goal of making entrepreneurial businesses more successful and competitive.
‘The QRC has a keen interest in securing the long-term vitality of the mining industry. Junior miners, however, face an uphill battle. Gathering an insight into the emergence and success or otherwise of new mining ventures is of key benefit to both the QRC and the mining sector,’ said QEC Chairman Dr Geoff Dickie.
‘QRC will be contributing more than $400,000 for this research, but the knowledge we will gain will be invaluable to the industry and to the optimum development of Queensland’s mineral resources,’ said QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche.

The Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research is Australia’s primary hub for research-based knowledge in entrepreneurship. ‘Entrepreneurship is the motor of economic growth, but the reality is that many new business ventures in Australia struggle to survive,’ said project leader Rene Bakker, a Senior Research Fellow at ACE.
‘Australia’s mining industry provides a fascinating context for increasing our understanding of the failure and success of new ventures, particularly with regard to how junior mining entrepreneurs find and select the opportunities that are right for them”.
